Lantern of Chagrin Valley is a residential care home for people with dementia like no other. Situated in Chagrin Falls, Ohio, this place is special. You wouldn’t know from looking at it from the outside, but once you step through the door and see inside? WOW! It’s truly amazing…
The home is designed for people – generally the elderly – with Alzheimer’s Disease or other dementia-related afflictions and is all set up to be as soothing and relaxing and enjoyable a retreat as possible. The main way they do it? They’ve made the building inside appear as though it is outside. Each room is almost like a little house, with a porch and garden. It’s quite fantastic!
They use specially-designed fiber optics in the ceiling to create a unique ‘starry sky’ effect throughout the building. There’s also a special daylight effect too. The paint design is consistent with the 1940’s/50’s period theme. This has been proven to calm older residents and keep an ambiance of continuation and familiarity.
CEO Jean Makesh describes it like this: “Every little thing you see, the wall color, the paint, actually has a therapeutic benefit, a therapeutic value.”
“… I take them back to those memories. I create a time capsule. It enables them to embrace everything around them.”
