Arcahaie, Haiti. 174 prison inmates overpowered guards and broke out of jail recently after a planned attack saw authorities taken on with makeshift and stolen weapons. The synchronized jail break saw a guard killed too.
So far, Haitian law enforcement have only tracked down and rearrested a dozen of the men. In part, due to the difficulties in finding and identifying the men (inmates don’t wear uniforms at this particular jail).
Haiti’s Minister Of Justice, Camille Edouard Junior told Reuters news agency this: “One prison officer was killed killing the incident. Three prisoners were wounded, including one who died as a consequence of his wounds.”
Reasons behind the jail break are wide-ranging and not fully know. Some say an earthquake assisted, others say gang members from outside helped. Other theories suggest that a guard working in the prison helped out.
The attack happened during ‘bath time’ when some inmates rushed a room where weapons were kept. Five rifles were stolen and the break began from there.
UN peacekeepers were drafted in to help set up checkpoints and try to apprehend the escaped prisoners.
One prisoner died during the escape. The search for the 161 other criminals continues.
