They called it the strongest card in UFC history, and boy did it live up to expectations!
Following the decision to legalize MMA in New York State, Dana White promised to put together a monumental line up for UFC 205, which was taking place in Madison Square Gardens. He didn’t disappoint. The card included Tyron Woodley vs. Stephen Thompson, Yoel Romero vs. Chris Weidman, and, most importantly, Conor McGregor vs. Eddie Alvarez.
The Lightweight title fight between McGregor and Alvarez was much anticipated. If victorious, McGregor would make history, holding two title belts concurrently. The pre-match press conference was incredible. True to form, McGregor turned up 20 minutes late, wearing a white fur coat, and proceeded to steal Alvarez’s belt and attempt to throw a chair at his opponent. And afterwards, when Alvarez asked for an apology, The Notorious responded by saying that his opponent could “suck on these big Irish balls.”
McGregor was confident. His prediction? “I think one round, if he can hold out. If he can drag it into the trenches, I’ll take my hat off to him but he’ll never be the same after if that is the case”.
“It means the world to me to fight here, it’s why I was pushing to fight here, I couldn’t miss this event. I built this event. I want the second belt, it has never been done before, it’s my life’s work. My opponents can’t work me out.”
And he had every reason to be confident. Although his prediction didn’t quite materialize, McGregor managed to defeat his opponent by knock out in the second round.
McGregor dominated proceedings from the off. He got stuck into Alvarez immediately, landing three big punches in the first round alone. This onslaught continued into the second round, with the Irishman knocking Alvarez down on the counter before following up with a ground and pound, thus becoming the first fighter to hold two belts in UFC history.
Always one to court controversy, McGregor’s victory will stick in the craw of some UFC fans, as well as the sport’s hierachy. But, the Irishman’s skill and endurance cannot be questioned. He will inevitably go down as one of the most important, and able, MMA fighters in history
